WHAT IS POST-TRAUMATIC AMNESIA?
Sometimes a result of a brain injury is post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). PTA causes the victim to not remember things and events consistently and continuously. This can be caused by any type of blow to the head. Many times it is accompanied by confusion and disorientation, though these symptoms are not always present.
PTA can last for minutes or weeks depending on the severity. Some of the memory loss can be permanent. The permanency of the memory loss is tested after the victim comes out of the confused and disoriented state.
There are different types of amnesia that can be caused by Post-Traumatic Amnesia:
- Retrograde Amnesia –This is permanent memory loss of any events leading up to the injury.
- Anterograde Amnesia – This is permanent memory loss of any events following the injury.
In either case the lost memory can be moments before and/or after the injury or could extend to days and weeks before and/or after the injury. The longer you suffer with post-traumatic amnesia the more at risk you are for permanent and severe brain damage.
