Pelvic Mesh | Vaginal Mesh Attorneys
If you had a transvaginal mesh (TVM)/pelvic mesh implant and are now suffering from painful, serious side effects after one or more revision surgeries, you may be eligible to receive compensation. More than 100,000 women have reportedly experienced complications as a result of pelvic mesh. Devices from many manufacturers including American Medical Systems AMS, Boston Scientific, C.R. Bard, Inc., Covidien and Johnson & Johnson have all been identified as causing severe harm.
What’s worse is that in some cases, women can experience lifelong pain even after mesh removal. In 2016, the FDA classified transvaginal mesh as a class III high-risk device. Research has also indicated that while mesh “often restores anatomy, it has not been shown to improve clinical benefit over traditional non-mesh repair.”
TRANSVAGINAL MESH USAGE AND HISTORY
Since the 1970’s, pelvic mesh devices have been surgically implanted for the correction of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and since the 1990’s mesh has been used to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Due to the demand of the devices, which were often cut by surgeons themselves to fit the anatomy, manufacturers developed mesh products specifically designed for SUI and POP, approved by the FDA in 1996 and 2002, respectively.
WHAT WENT WRONG
Between 2005 and 2010, nearly 4,000 injuries, complications and fatalities were reported to the FDA in connection with transvaginal/pelvic mesh devices. Since the FDA’s reclassification in 2016, manufacturers were given 30 months to prove that their products are safe. Unfortunately, this action came far too late for hundreds of thousands of women who are currently suffering the side effects of this malfunctioning product.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF PELVIC MESH
Among the potential injuries or side effects associated with defective pelvic mesh products are:
- Chronic vaginal drainage
- Erosion of the vaginal tissue
- Feeling as though something is protruding from the vagina
- Lower back pain
- Mesh trim or removal in doctor’s office
- One or more surgeries to repair or remove mesh
- Pain during intercourse
- Perforations of the bowel, bladder or blood vessels
- Pressure or feeling of “fullness” in the lower abdomen
- Reoccurrence of POP or SUI
- Urinary problems
- Vaginal bleeding
- Vaginal infections
- Vaginal pain not related to intercourse
- Vaginal scarring
