Hospital infections cause over 75,000 deaths every year. These are infections that patients would not have contracted without a hospital stay. Not many patients are aware of hospital contracted infections and don’t really think that by acquiring an infection after an illness or surgery is a mistake, however it can be, and normally is.

Types of Hospital Infections

Some infections, such staph have been around for years. However, the new MRSA staph string is a new severe infection. Sepsis is also a severe illness that can be caused, or worsened by medical malpractice. When one becomes septic, or is diagnosed with sepsis, it means the bloodstream has become overwhelmed with bacteria. Other common severe hospital infections include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Staph Infections and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bloodstream infections
  • Surgical site infections

If sepsis, MRSA, staph, or any other infection is not diagnosed and treated properly it can lead to:

Common Causes of Hospital Infections

Hospital-acquired infections, are caused in part because hospital patients with compromised immune systems are in close proximity to one another. Patients also encounter bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses because medical staff do not follow proper procedures, including disinfection protocols.

A machine used during heart surgery is also the source of many hospital infections. The machine, manufactured by Sorin Group, heats and cools a patient during heart surgery. When the machine is not cleaned properly, the Sorin Heater Cooler 3T, could expose the patient to the NTM bacteria. The Pennsylvania Department of Health estimates that about 80 hospitals in the state perform open heart surgeries and use the Sorin machine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received at least 32 reports of patients infected as a result of the machines, and the agency has warned hospitals about the continued use of the machines.
