When an accident, work injury, medical mistake, or any other negligent act causes a hearing loss injury the victim’s life is instantly changed forever. The victim and those close to the victim must cope with the immediate changes to every day life, and medical and care costs can be high.
Deafness can either be complete or partial loss of hearing. If only one ear suffers hearing loss or deafness the victim has partial hearing loss. The ears can also both be injured and the victim could suffer from a muted sense of hearing, which means they may be able to hear but not well. Partial hearing loss may be treated with the use of surgery or hearing aids. If a victim suffers an injury that causes complete deafness they are suffering complete hearing loss.
TYPES OF HEARING LOSS
Whether hearing loss is complete or partial it is generally classified into three different categories or types: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. The common causes of hearing loss is dependent on which type of hearing loss the injury is classified under.
Conductive hearing loss prevents the sound from getting to the inner ear. It is usually caused by some type of disorder in the inner or outer part of the ear. Sounds and voices may sound faint or distorted to the victim of conductive hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss is a result of the inner ear nerves being damaged. When these nerves are damaged they cannot properly tansmit their signals to the brain. Victims of sensorineural hearing loss often complain that people mumble, or that they can hear what people are saying but cannot understand it. The most common cause of this type of hearing loss is age, however negligent acts can also cause this type of hearing loss.
Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural.
